Breakfast Ball #25: Death, Taxes, Scottie Scheffler Winning Golf Tournaments
Hatton gets his first LIV win, Harrington gets his 40th pro win
We have a couple of quiet weeks coming up in golf before the build up for The Open begins. As we are at the halfway point in the year, next week’s newsletter will serve as a report card for the first half of the year for our top European players!
Scottie Scheffler wins the Travelers Championship for his SIXTH win on the PGA Tour this year as Tyrrell Hatton gets his first win on LIV Golf
European winners from the British Amateur, the DP World Tour and the PGA Champions Tour

Scottie Scheffler became the first player since Arnold Palmer in 1963 to rack up six wins before July with a win at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut. It was a scoring fest, with the winning mark coming in at 22-under and only three players in the field of 70 shooting over par for the week. Cam Young shot a historic 59 on Saturday to post the thirteenth ever round under 60 on the PGA Tour.
Scheffler won the tournament on the first playoff hole against his good friend Tom Kim, who pushed him all the way but ultimately fell short. We are running out of superlatives to describe how well this year has gone for Scottie. He is only the fifth player since 1980 to have six wins in an entire season, and he likely still has ten or more starts to add to that total.
Shane Lowry was the best of the Europeans as he continued his strong run of form with a T9 finish. Tommy Fleetwood, Bob MacIntyre, Matthieu Pavon, Seamus Power, and Viktor Hovland also finished in the top twenty. Rory McIlroy pulled out of the event after his difficult finish in the US Open, and will return to action at the Scottish Open on July 11th.
Tyrrell Hatton Destroys the Field at LIV Nashville:
Tyrrell Hatton picked up his first LIV Golf victory by a six stroke margin over Sam Horsfield. It was a very impressive performance from the Englishman, who was in the mix at the US Open until a difficult 77 on Sunday. The closest he had come to a debut win on the tour was a T4 in Miami back in April, but he left no doubt about this one as he shot a final round 65 to cruise to the victory.
It was a double victory for Hatton as Legion XIII picked up the team title partly thanks to a T3 finish for Jon Rahm, who returned to play after pulling out of the US Open due to injury. Lee Westwood had his best finish of the season to date, finishing alongside Rahm in T3. His last top ten came in 2022 as he has seriously struggled to post anything close to that in the past two years.

British Amateur:
🇩🇰 Jacob Slov Olesen became the first Danish player to win the British Amateur Championship, the most prestigious European amateur event. Olesen just graduated from the University of Arkansas and had an incredible year, breaking many school records. This will qualify him for the Open next month, as well as next year’s Masters and US Open if he decides to remain amateur.
DP World Tour:
🇮🇹 Guido Migliozzi won the KLM Open on the DP World Tour in a three way playoff. This was his fourth win on the DPWT and earned him qualification for the Open Championship next month. The 27-year-old will also represent Italy at the Olympics in August alongside Matteo Manassero.
PGA Champions Tour:
🇮🇪 Padraig Harrington won his eighth PGA Champions Tour title at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open. It was good preparation for the US Senior Open which takes place at Newport Country Club this coming week. This was his third win in a row at this event, his 40th professional win worldwide, and he celebrated appropriately:
“It wasn't as if he was short of a bob or two before he went to LIV, you know, and I think if there is a regret [it's that] he isn't playing against the best players in the world week in and week out.”
Coming up this week on Tour
The PGA Tour begins two quieter weeks with the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit
The next big event on tour will be the Scottish Open which begins on July 11th
The DP World Tour is on the Adriatic Coast for the Italian Open
